The School of Fashion at Southampton Solent University is launching a new BA (Hons) Beauty Promotion course recruiting now for October 2015.
The innovative three-year course will focus on developing students for a career within the global beauty industry. Magazine beauty director turned academic, Elizabeth Barnett-Lawton developed the course, building on the success of the Media Fashion Styling programme, led by Principal Lecturer, Jennifer Anyan.
The programme includes BA (Hons) Fashion Styling and BA (Hons) Make Up and Hair Design, which both launched in 2007. The two degree courses were groundbreaking in the UK and have fast become leaders in their fields, attracting students from the UK and abroad.
The new BA (Hons) Beauty Promotion course will deliver units in various areas much like a Fashion Promotion degree but tailored to the beauty industry. Students will study multi-platform journalism, styling, marketing, PR, advertising and trend forecasting with an opportunity to specialise as they progress.
With over a decade’s experience writing and styling beauty, celebrity and fashion editorial features for women’s magazines including Vogue , Harper’s Bazaar , InStyle and Good Housekeeping, Elizabeth Barnett-Lawton is excited to be leading the course.
“Through mentoring final-year Media Fashion Styling students, it became clear that there was a need for a course that developed students specifically for careers in the beauty industry and where there is good potential for graduate employment,” says Elizabeth Barnett-Lawton.
The beauty industry is worth £17 billion and is forecast to grow 16% by 2016. It employs over a million people in the UK and yet there has been no course to develop students for career in the professional beauty industry, until now.
